Internet Explorer 5 and 6 could display a moderate number of mathematics symbols, and AXLE used to provide support for deitect rendering of Mathematics for IE. Sadly, IE 7 dropped a lot of rather common mathematical symbols. Consequently, support for mathematics in IE now requires a plug-in.
