All assignments are automatically graded. Students must complete all assignments to achieve a grade of "P" for the course. These should be completed before the start of the semester's exams3
For summer classes, before the end of the last day of classes
In practice, this depends on when the instructor turns in the grades. This might be early or late in the exam week, at the convenience of the instructor.
I will not announce, nor respond to questions about what the “real” last day to have something counted in a semester will be, because, if I do so, someone will complain to the administration that I have made assignments “due” during exam week.
If you want to be certain that something will be counted, get it done before exams start. After that, any additional days you get should be regarded as a gift.
Students who have not completed all of the assignments, but have completed at least 3 of them, will be given a grade of "I" (Incomplete). This will become a "P" if the student completes the remaining assignments but becomes an "F" at the end of the subsequent semester if all assignments have not yet been completed. (This is done by the Registrar's office, not by me, and is the normal ODU policy for expired "I" grades.) See Incomplete Work, below.
Students who have registered with the course web site but not completed at least three of the assignments will receive a grade of "WF".
Students who receive an "I" or "F" may continue to submit the remaining assignments, with a change of grade issued during subsequent semesters. See Incomplete Work, below, for the details.
Students can check their grade status at any time by using the Grades button on the course home page.
University regulations require that all instructors of 100 or 200-level courses provide students with an interim grade report by the end of the 4th week of the semester. Obviously, such a report is of questionable utility in a self-paced course like this one.
Students may obtain this report by using the Grades button on the course home page. If, by the end of the 4th week of the semester, they have completed at least 4 assignments, they are "on a pace" to successfully finish the course by the end of the semester.
An "I" grade that is not resolved during the following semester is automatically changed to an "F" by the University.
A student with a grade of "I" or "F" (including expired "I" grades) may still achieve a "P" by completing the missing assignments during subsequent semesters. Students need not, and should not, register for the course a second time, as this will only result in their being charged additional tuition for the same course. Once all the assignments have been completed, the instructor will submit a change of grade some time during that semester.5

Students who wish to complete the course in subsequent semesters must complete a minimum of 2 additional assignments each semester (including summers) thereafter or their active status in the course will be revoked and the "F" grade will become permanent.6
For students enrolled in Summer 2007 or earlier, only one additional assignment per semester is required. Such students must complete all assignments within 3 years of their initial enrollment into the course.
Exceptions to these requirements, including requests for additional time to make up an "I" or "F" beyond the schedule laid out here or requests to make up a "WF" will only be granted under the conditions defined by the ODU policy on incomplete grades: “exceptional circumstances beyond the student's control” . Except in such circumstances, students who fail to complete the course in the time allowed will not be permitted to resume the course without re-registering, and would then be expected to complete all assignments from the beginning of the course.
